Former CCTV anchor Fang Hongjin has been released by authorities after being detained for one day for contract fraud, Legal Evening News reported.
Fang was allowed to walk free after paying a 1.2 million yuan debt to Hualong Group based in north China's Hebei Province.
The report revealed that the television star borrowed the money from Hualong but refused to pay it back and remained out of reach after the contract's deadline expired.
Local police confirmed that Fang returned the money before he was released from custody, but did not specify when this happened.
The newspaper article suggests Fang was released on bail pending trial, but this has not been confirmed by police.
48-year-old Fang began to work at CCTV in 1992. He co-founded the prime time news review program 'Topics in Focus' in 1995 and was co-anchor of the program. He joined Shanghai-based Dragon TV in 2003 but left three years later.
