Senior Chinese Military Officer to Visit U.S.

Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, will visit the United State from Oct. 24 to Nov. 3 at the invitation of U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

A spokesman with the ministry said the visit will be aimed to fulfil the consensus reached by Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on improving and developing the relations between the two countries' armies.

During the visit, Xu will hold talks with Gates and the two will exchange views about the relations of the two sides' armies and international and regional issues.

The spokesman said currently the development of the relations between the two armies is facing an important opportunity and the two sides should look after each other's interests and concerns under the principle of respect, mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit.

The spokesman said the two sides should handle sensitive issues properly and strengthen exchanges and cooperation in a bid to promote healthy and steady development of the military relations of the two sides.
